Fold with the Artist

Kevin Box builds monuments out of something you can crumple in one hand. From his studio in the high desert south of Santa Fe, he casts origami into bronze, aluminum and stainless steel, a process that took two years to work out and another seven to refine, and that he is still refining.

The sculptures that came out of it travel the country as Origami in the Garden, an exhibition more than two million people have walked through, made in collaboration with some of the most accomplished folders in the world.

But every piece in it starts the same way any piece of origami does: a flat square, a set of creases, and the decision of where to put the first one. That is where this afternoon begins. In the Maker Room, Kevin walks through the folds that underpin his work, the classical forms, the sequences that turn geometry into a wing or a stem, and how a fold made in paper survives the journey into metal.

You will work with your own hands, at your own pace, alongside an artist who has spent twenty years asking what paper can hold. No experience required. Curiosity is the only prerequisite.
