Artist in Residence

Clark Mitchell

We are honored to welcome master pastelist Clark Mitchell as Appellation Healdsburg's Artist-in-Residence, November 15, 2025 – January 15, 2025.

A distinguished artist and designated Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America, Mitchell's career has been defined by a deep connection to landscape painting and the natural world. His work has earned numerous prestigious awards, including Best of Show at the Sausalito Plein Air Festival (2024), the Laguna Plein Air Invitational (2005), and the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational (2011). His paintings have graced the covers of American Artist, Southwest Art, and the Pastel Journal.

For over four decades, Mitchell has made Sonoma County Wine Country his home, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the surrounding landscape. His mastery of pastel—prized for its brilliant color, ease of handling, and portability—is complemented by his accomplished work in oils, including innovative pieces enhanced with copper, gold, and aluminum leaf.

During his residency, Mitchell will lead two Crafted at Appellation classes, introducing guests to the vibrant medium of pastel painting and the art of capturing landscape. Following each session, he'll host casual "office hours," inviting participants to share a glass of wine and conversation about art, process, and his lifelong exploration of place and nature.

Clark's paintings will be on display throughout his residency, giving guests a chance to experience and learn more about his artistry. Visit his website to explore additional works and discover the stories behind his landscapes.
